GWW Asset Protection Guidelines Update
The Utilities Extranet has been updated with the latest version developed by Greater Western Water (GWW).
This document provides guidance for designers, contractors, utility advisors and project teams undertaking works in the vicinity of GWW's water and sewer infrastructure. The guideline has been developed to improve understanding of GWW asset protection requirements and to support the safe planning and delivery of construction activities near existing assets.
The guideline provides detailed information on:
- Water and sewer asset classifications and characteristics.
- Asset protection envelopes, including No Go Zones, Buffer Zones and Zones of Influence.
- Minimum clearances between GWW assets and proposed infrastructure.
- Safe excavation and service proving methodologies.
- Hydro-vacuum and mechanical excavation requirements.
- Protection measures for HDD, piling, trenching and other construction activities.
- Surface loading, compaction and ground movement considerations.
- Tree planting and ground anchor clearance requirements.
- Restoration, reinstatement and asset access obligations.
A key feature of the guideline is the detailed framework for managing activities around existing water and sewer assets, including defined protection zones and construction controls designed to reduce the risk of asset damage, service interruptions and public safety impacts.
The document also includes guidance on working within Zones of Influence, undertaking directional drilling near GWW infrastructure, protecting assets from vibration and settlement, and managing excavation activities through established industry best practices. [
The guideline is particularly relevant for projects involving road construction, utility relocations, land development, trenchless construction, civil works and other activities where interaction with existing water or sewer infrastructure may occur.
This resource is being shared for information and knowledge-sharing purposes only. Users should continue to engage directly with Greater Western Water and comply with all applicable approvals, standards, technical requirements and project-specific conditions where works may impact GWW assets.
Useful reference figures within the guideline include the asset protection envelope and Zone of Influence concepts, which help illustrate how GWW manages risks associated with nearby excavation and construction activities.
