Safety Net for Deep Excavation

Level Crossing Removals Project - Metropolitan Roads Program Alliance (MRPA) are protecting deep excavation sites with handrails and innovative net protection.

The Clyde Road level crossing removal project was required to install a new drainage line, involving approximately 380 meters of micro tunnelling/pipe jacking. A launch shaft was constructed to allow for the works and would need to remain in service open for several months.

The public safety risk was assessed as high due to proximity to the skate park, depth of the shaft, profile of the operation and duration the shaft would remain in service.

The Metropolitan Roads Program Alliance’s (MRPA) Clyde Road project team implemented a hazard control to eliminate a fall from height hazard which local communities could be exposed to around a 5m launch shaft when workers left site for the day.

By installing a safety net on the 5 metre deep shaft, the team was able to eliminate the fall from height hazard and provide protection against unauthorised entry to the shaft outside of normal working hours.
