The MTIA Annual Health and Safety Awards was held Wednesday 15 November 2023 at 121 Exhibition Street.
The MTIA Annual Health and Safety Awards is a program to identify, promote and celebrate positive safety initiatives developed and implemented on the Major Transport Infrastructure Program.
The Award seeks to:
- Encourage the increased identification and promotion of positive safety activities undertaken across MTIA
- Collectively recognise and celebrate the positive safety activities being undertaken by the MTIA PO, the work package, principal contractor, subcontractors, solution vendors and workers, and,
- Provide visibility to other MTIA construction partners, stakeholders and the construction industry on what ‘good’ looks like,
There are multiple categories a Leading Safety Practice Guide can be awarded for:
- Major Transport Infrastructure Authority CEO's Delivery Safety Award – Improving delivery safety outcomes
- Major Transport Infrastructure Authority Director-General's Innovation Award– Innovation for the future
- Major Transport Infrastructure Authority's Program-Wide Award – the opportunity for Program-wide adoption
- MTIA High Commendation Award(s) - (acknowledging one or more additional high standard entries)

Winning Leading Safety Practice
Hand Arm Vibration Awareness and EliminationNorth East Link Program - WeBuild Increasing knowledge of hand arm vibration and the implementation of remote equipment to eliminate exposure. |
High Commendation
Reducing plant operating zone risk using technologyMajor Road Projects Victoria - Seymour Whyte The Stop It remote E-stop allows for remote activation and resetting of mobile plant via a remote button with a range of up to 100 meters. This enables a designated spotter to stand outside of the plant operating zone with a fob and stop the machine in the event of imminent danger. |
Shortlisted
| MRPV | Seymour Whyte | T-Lok steel wedge piece - safety barrier Assists with reducing off-set radii, increasing workable construction areas behind barriers. |
| MRPV | Decmil, BMD, Bild Group | Reducing cost by collaboration at project interfaces Remove the need for a person to enter the plant operating zone to activate an E-Stop. |
| RPV | Downer | Delivery truck inspection cameras Cameras inspect ALL bulk delivery truck loads prior to entering the project site. |
| WGTP | CPB John Holland | Safety Handling of Geofabric on West Gate Tunnel Project A process for simultaneously rolling out 2 layers of geofabric and geo grid was developed by workers on the West Gate Tunnel Project’s East Zone. |

Winning Leading Safety Practice
Using digital rehearsal to practice critical risk activitiesMajor Road Projects Victoria - BMD 4D Technology was used for a major lift during a rail and road occupation. Multiple simulations conducted in the planning stage to identify challenges, reduce risk and improve delivery methods. |
High Commendation
Accurate planning and installation of GirdersWest Gate Tunnel Project - CPB-John Holland The combination of sophisticated software applications and lifting innovations were used for the first time on a project globally to accurately plan and install steel girders. |
Shortlisted
| LXRP | Fulton Hogan | Custom Precast Panel Lifting Forklift Development of a custom plant attachment to allow lifting of precast panels within space constraints. |
| WGTP | CPB John Holland | Safer methods for splicing steel portals and girders Improved steel splicing methodologies that eliminated the manual handling of splice plates. |
| MRPV | BMD | Vulnerable road user protection system The system utilises AI-programmed cameras to detect vulnerable road users |
| MRPV | BMD | Improving occupation visualisation and communication with augmented reality Construction visualisation through augmented reality. |

Tri-sign remote-controlled multi-message traffic management signsMRPV - McConnell Dowell & Seymour WhyteMRPV has been utilising remote-controlled, multi-message signboards for traffic control on its projects to reduce the risk to traffic controllers from being in live traffic | ![]() |
Shortlisted
| LXRP | WPA McConnell Dowell | Effective prestart communications Effective Communication Sessions (ECS) for prestarts |
| MRPV | Seymour Whyte | Improving Pedestrian Management with 'Red Carpet' Treatment Honcho Boss Mats ('Red Carpet') provide visible, slip-resistant temporary pathways for pedestrians to identify and navigate construction sites safely. |
| NELP | WeBuild | Increased knowledge retention through innovative induction methods Spark has developed an induction delivering learnings on general safety in a variety of delivery formats which has a much greater knowledge retention for inductees. |
| LXRP | SEPA | Safe installation of interlocking pin for water barriers A purpose-designed tool has been developed for safe installation of steel interlocking pins into water barriers. |
